What is Udyam registration?

Udyam is India's MSME registration. What the investment and turnover thresholds are, what benefits it unlocks in tenders, and how it is verified.

Udyam is the online MSME registration system operated by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar. Registration is free, online, and self-declared against PAN and GST data.

Classification

A business is classified as micro, small or medium on both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover. Crossing either threshold moves it up a category. The current thresholds are published by the Ministry and have been revised more than once — check the official notification rather than a secondary source, because the numbers move.

What it unlocks

  • EMD exemption in many government tenders — see EMD
  • Tender fee exemption and relaxed eligibility in some procurement
  • Public procurement policy targets that reserve a share of central government purchasing for MSEs
  • Delayed payment protection under the MSMED Act, including a statutory payment window and interest on delay, enforceable through MSEFC councils
  • Priority-sector lending treatment and various state incentives

The payment protection is the one most often underused. It gives a small supplier a statutory route against a large buyer who sits on invoices.

What people get wrong

Assuming registration is automatic. It is self-declared but it does have to be done, and the certificate has a number that a buyer can verify.

Not re-checking classification. A growing business can cross a threshold and stop qualifying for the benefits it is still claiming.

Claiming an exemption the tender does not offer. MSME exemptions apply where the tender document says they apply, not universally.

On Bidancer

Udyam is captured as part of business KYC where it applies, so an MSME's status is established up front rather than argued for per tender.
