Roles and permissions

The four roles inside a business, what each can do, and the one distinction that matters most — which of them can commit the business to something binding.

A verified business is rarely one person. Adding your team means enquiries reach whoever should handle them, and it means nobody is sharing a login.

The four roles

RoleFor
OwnerWhoever the business ultimately belongs to
AdminRunning the business's presence day to day
Sales agentWorking enquiries and bids, without control of the business
AccountantThe financial side — billing, invoices, reconciliation

The split is by what someone needs to do, not seniority. An accountant who never touches a listing does not need to be an admin to see the invoices.

Who can commit the business

Only owners and admins can bind the business

Registering for a trade show, signing up as a sponsor — anything that commits the business to an obligation — is restricted to owners and admins. A sales agent can work enquiries all day and cannot commit you to a booth.

This is the distinction worth understanding before you assign roles. Everything else is convenience; this one is authority.

Sales agent is not a junior admin

Worth stating plainly, because the name misleads.

A sales agent works the commercial pipeline — enquiries in and out, bids — and does not get the business's control surfaces. No publishing the catalogue, no hosting tenders, no committing to anything.

That is not a demotion, it is the shape of the job. It also means you can add somebody who sells for you without handing them the business.

See Acting contexts for the related but separate question of which identity an action is taken as.

Adding people

Roles are what someone may do. Getting them into the business, and out of it again, is covered separately — see Inviting and removing people.
